A Suffolk County Police officer on patrol on Lee Avenue in Wyandanch at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, when a driver - later identified as Bay Shore resident Daevon Cannon - changed lanes without signaling, prompting a traffic stop.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said that when the driver was signaled to stop, Cannon sped away and took the officer on a high-speed chase, “driving recklessly.”
Cannon eventually struck a telephone pole at the intersection fo Washington Avenue and North 27th Street in Wheatley Heights and his vehicle was stopped.
Hart said that when the officer ordered Cannon and his passenger to leave the vehicle, Cannon put the car in reverse and drove at the officer, who was forced to jump out of the vehicle’s path before it struck a marked police cruiser.
The officer continued to pursue the pair, who ultimately abandoned the vehicle on Colonial Spring Road and took off on foot.
Cannon was found attempting to hop a fence, and when he reached toward his waistband, an officer shot him with a Taser.
After being taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip for evaluation after being tased, Cannon was arrested and charged with unlawful fleeing, reckless driving, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of an incident.
Cannon was held overnight and scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
